I stay at the York each time I visit San Fran mainly because it is quite central, though away from the noise. The rooms are not big but comfortable and do have decent bedding, tea & coffee, TV, full bathroom, air conditroning and heating and a huge walk in closet to house your clothes/cases/shopping!! The staff are extremely helpful and always greet you sincerely rather than the "put on" smile that you get at big chains. Complimentary breakfast is good - toast, muffins, fruit, fresh fruit juice and various hot drinks - great for setting you up for the day. Our only peeve was that our room overlooked an airconditioning vent and wall (Room 218) and so did not get much natural light - however, we didnt bother asking to be moved because although we were there for a week we didnt spend daytimes in our bedroom.

The York was an acceptable hotel. All staff were very friendly and helpful. In fact, they went out of their way to help. It was quiet (we got a room in the back away from Sutter St.) However, the walls are very thin. The first night, we heard people in rooms around us but thankfully, it was brief and no partiers! The rooms were very comfortable, clean and nicely decorated.

We found it to be a good location. It is about 7 blocks away from Union Square, which is a nice walk. The reason we did not rate it as Very Good/Would Recommend is there was not much character. It is not a neat, cute boutique hotel but plain Jane. Which is fine if that is what you want.

The coffee shop "Cup o' Joe" right down the street is great. As is the Hyde Street Bistro and Wine Bar on Hyde (one block south and about 8 blocks west). A very nice walk, fabulous food!
