Ideally located, just off Central Park West and mere steps away from the Lincoln Centre, a short ride from Times Square and many more sights and museums, the YMCA West Side is just perfect for guests travelling on a budget. No doubt it was voted Best Elder hostel by the New York Tourist Board in 1997. The Leisure facilities are great and all the rooms are very comfortable. (Guests booking a twin or double room should note that these will consist of bunk-bed style bedding).

Reviews of YMCA West Side - Shared Facilities New York

Customer Rating:

This was OK for a hostel. Relatively clean and comfortable. Great maid service. More clean and comfortable than a motor lodge with our own bathroom and king sized bed we slept in the night before.
However I did see a cockroach wandering across the bathroom floor. Overall, great location, and good for the budget traveller... but still expensive as is everything in NYC.

I would recommend it to others as a economical place to stay in New York. It is in a great location and that alone made it a good value for the money. Be aware that it is an older building and the rooms/bathrooms reflect that in terms of wear and tear from use...the rooms were fairly clean although the floors could have used a bit more attention. The bathrooms were another matter altogether, they could have used more frequent attention since they are shared by so many...I brought disinfectant wipes with me and wore pool shoes in the bathroom. I did not see any roaches during my stay there. The front desk personnel and the cleaning crew were friendly. I would not hesitate to stay there again in the future.

Great place to stay I was there for 5nts and was very impressed much nicer than I thought. I had a single room which was very clean, nice soft bath towel, which was changed each day. The bathroom was much better than I imagined with 3 showers and sinks all of which were very clean, the only criticism I can raise is that the showers were one extreme temperature or the other. Staff were helpful throughout my stay, and in particular the cafeteria staff very friendly, plus the food was good and reasonably priced. The location was perfect, just off Central Park, great for an early morning run, cycle or just a walk. What more can I say, I shall certainly go there again.

Excellent for location and price, better than feared for a shared bath establishment. Actually, the bathrooms, though not attached to one's room, are private and quite clean (at least on the 13th floor). They are arranged in a row along one corridor of the floor with each containing a good shower, a washbowl, and a toilet. There are paper towels and a soap dispenser inside so you don't have to carry the one provided towel every time you want to wash your hands. Entrance is by means of your key-card. In the mornings it can be hard to find a vacant one, but once one is available, it's all yours with a good lock on the door! The rooms are pretty spartan but clean, and the bed was firm but comfortable enough for me. Someone makes up the bed and brings a clean towel every day! Not bad!

I would not recommend staying at the West Side YMCA unless short on funds and desperate. The room is the size of a closet with a wood frame bed with a "bottom of the line' twin mattress. The 12in TV received 5 stations of mostly static. The road noises, even on the 7th floor, could be heard through the thin pane glass window. I stayed here in spring, with the temp. in the 40s that night. The room was cold and the old steam heater wouldn't turn on. I was told the heater system only comes on if the temp is below 50 deg (inside or out was never clarified), which it never did. They did provide a blanket when asked, although the cleanliness of it, and the threadbare bedspread was questionable. Doors slamed and people talked in the halllway until late at night. I won't stay here again.
